What I've Heard From You

Updated: Jan 8, 2019

Over the past few weeks I’ve visited Democrats across Southeast Michigan at holiday parties and multiple meetings. I've made tons of phone calls to people all over the state. I spoke with hundreds of Democrats about my vision for a stronger, more inclusive party.

The number one thing I heard from you is that you want to know the work you’ve done matters…. that we ARE making a difference.  I’m hearing that people want to be included all year, not just when there are doors to knock before the election. People want transparency – without a foot on the scale during primaries. People want to be included in decision-making and be part of a community of Democrats, especially in red areas.

The first time I attended the Northville Democratic Club I found a few people sitting around a table in our Library. But those people persisted and the club grew. In 2008 my daughter came home from school to tell me she started a Northville High School Democratic Club. She shamed me into getting involved and I ended up phone banking at the home of Susan Nichols who is now one of my best friends. The Northville Dems grew from about 60 to our all-time high of 407 through grass roots activism. Today we are a community of Democrats. I learned about inclusion, transparency and community-building from the amazing activists in Northville, and I learned even more from collaborating with clubs in surrounding areas. I know there are many groups throughout the State doing the same work of building communities built on Democratic values. There is no ‘one size fits all’ way to grow, but we have to trust local groups to organize in their areas. Whether it’s traditional Dem Clubs, new groups such as Indivisible and Fems for Dems or non-traditional progressive groups we must live our values and give every Democrat a seat at the table.

I know our party can do more. A vote for me for MDP Chair will be a vote for inclusion, transparency and community building. I’m asking you to vote for me at the MDP State Convention at Cobo Center on February 2nd. You must join before January 2nd to be eligible to vote at State Convention. So join the Michigan Democratic Party or renew your membership now.

You matter! The Party needs you. There is something for you to do all year, every year. All of us working harder than ever will right the ship and stabilize our Democracy. I know if we come together in 2019, we can build a better Party…… United we are Democrats, and United we will Win.

Happy Holidays from my family to yours. - Lisa
